Prime

Prime (Practice-based Research in Mathematics Education) is a group of mathematics education practitioner-scholars who lead our School’s drive to innovate and develop student education.

Alongside colleagues from other School departments, we deliver high-quality education and govern the School’s student education work.

In partnership with students, we undertake projects to review and enhance our practice, to develop new materials, and to implement and evaluate new pedagogical ideas.

Areas of focus

  • Assessment: Piloting, improving, and publicising new ways to assess student learning
  • Student experiences: Running a long-term project to investigate student lives and on-course experiences, to better understand and support them.
  • Digital education: Trialling new technologies, finding ways to make our teaching work smoother and more effective for both staff and students.
  • Accessibility: Developing, adopting and supporting resources and techniques to give the educational access to the broadest range of students.
  • Engagement: Investigating how to engage students both in and out of class, to support learning.
  • Co-curriculum: Leading projects to embed ethics and sustainability into our curriculum, while actively developing computational and professional skills.
  • Outreach: Conducting high-profile public engagement activities, including published authors of popular mathematics books.
  • Internationalisation: Delivering enhancement programmes to offer additional support to students whose first language is not English.
