Developing the process and mix design for a carbon-neutral block using mineralized industrial waste

Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) technologies are considered a cornerstone in decarbonisation strategies for the UK industries through mineral carbonation of material rich in calcium and magnesium oxides and hydroxides. The block making technology to be prototyped in this study combines the benefits from upcycling high volumes of waste from electric arc furnace steel production and sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere to achieve a first-of-its kind carbon neutral building solution in the UK. If successful and scaled to cover the UK demand for blocks, it is predicted that about 10% of territorial annual GHG emissions can be reduced.
