- Course: Mechanical Engineering MSc
- Nationality: Chinese
What course did you study?
I studied mechanical engineering for both my undergraduate and master program. During the study period, I learned lots of knowledge about mechanical technology, for example, aerospace structure, thermo-fluids and some design and analysis skills.
Why did you decide to study a masters at the University of Leeds?
I decided to go to the University of Leeds because Leeds is a world class university, and it is reputed as an excellent university with Mechanical Engineering. I was interested in the modules offered under the bachelor and master program, and it did give me a lot of theoretical skills and practical training.
What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University so far and why?
Team work, sharing ideas, and communication with local students/lecturers and the students from all over the world in my department and other societies has been the best aspect of studying this course.
Besides what I learned during my major, I also explored lots of things around campus, I exercised in the Edge gym and took part in activities from the Students Union society.
Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed.
I did the buggy project with my team when I was in my second year, it was exciting to have the whole design process with my partners, we discussed a lot and optimized the design over and over again, we all enjoyed this process and we were awarded 2nd place of the suspending structure design in all teams. Besides the team work, I also investigated lots of professional skills during my masters project. I did the experiment of dissection of knee cartilage of a pig, and then I started to build a model in FEA software and did some analysis of elastic modulus and permeability of cartilage. That was a new and exciting process during my study of my masters program, I discussed and learned lots of things from my professor and other colleagues who did research in biological and medical engineering department. It was a really special experience in my life.
What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?
Leeds is a friendly, multi-culture and energetic city which is really welcome to all students and people from all over the world. People are friendly and smile to you on the street, in the campus. I enjoyed the shopping, eating and other activities offered in Leeds and the university.
What are your ambitions for the future?
I would like to develop all of my professional skills in my future job, and I would like to be an engineer to provide solutions to various projects/items. I believe the courses from mechanical engineering were reliable to support technical development.
What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?
Team-work, open discussion and becoming a critical thinker will definitely help a lot for my future career, I believe what I have gained during my time at the university will enable me to be a better decision maker and it will help me to have a clearer vision of problems I might face in my future.
