What have you been doing since finishing your studies? What are you doing in terms of your career?
Once I completed my masters at the University of Leeds, I began focussing on my career in terms of applying for jobs. The Career Centre provided me with lots of help and guidance throughout many job applications process, especially with getting my CVs and cover letters. Now it’s been almost a year since I started working at the Solarplicity Ltd as a Design Engineer and getting hands-on experience with many different projects in the Solar Industry.
Please can you explain why you chose to do MSc in Electrical engineering & Renewable Energy Systems?
Power engineering has been my topic of interest when I was studying my undergraduate degree in Electronics and Communication. This is when I began to see my real passion in the alternative energy sector and chose to move my career towards sustainability. This one year master’s degree in electrical engineering and renewable energy system has perfectly fitted with modules that provide in-depth detail in renewable energy.
What company are you working for, what is your role and what does it involve?
I am currently working at the Solarplicity Limited as a Design Engineer, which mainly involves in the design of solar farms, commercial roof tops, and carport systems. Our company was formerly known as the Sustain Solar Limited, which is one of the pioneer engineering companies in the solar industry in the UK, contributing affordable and sustainable PV energy solutions especially for homeowners, schools, housing associations and businesses across the UK.
This is a very interesting job as it involves real-time design of solar PV systems using simulation software like AUTOCAD, PVsyst, and PVsol. I work in the commercial design department with a team of design engineers which involves in designing utility, ground mount solar farms and commercial roof tops. This also involves commercial buildings, several football stadiums, ports etc. Being an electrical design engineer, the training and development obtained from line managers and senior engineers is really useful. It is a great experience for me in terms of my knowledge and thirst for professional development in this field.
What experiences at Leeds do you think have particularly helped with your career/will help with your future career?
I am tuned to think innovatively above the dot, as I developed my problem-solving skills as a student whilst at the University of Leeds. Engineering comes with challenges and I believe they are opportunities for me to learn as a graduate engineer. There are two things the University of Leeds has offered me, firstly the resource available like the library and secondly the knowledge of the senior staff who are well experienced in mentoring you.
Looking back, why did you choose to study your particular course and why did you choose the University of Leeds?
As an international student, I chose University of Leeds because of its reputation in the UK. The world class faculty, library, laboratories, modern and high tech classrooms made it appealing for me when I saw the university brochure. Another reason I chose this university was I know a couple of great people in the industry who have graduated from this university.
I always felt that Leeds was one of the most perfect places for study I n the United Kingdom. Not only the ranking of the university is something that attracted me but the overall professionalism and unique dedication in all areas of the education sector is something that made me choose University of Leeds.
What was the best aspect of the course/the University and why? Any highlights?
One of the best aspects of the course was the modules that covered in depth details of the concept and the excellent faculty trained to provide us the best knowledge and resources. When I turn back to those days at the school of electronic and electrical, those were days when we enjoyed ourselves with group exercises (for example the electronic industry dissertation subject which inculcated team working amongst us), presentation and assignments which made me who I am today.
What other activities outside of your studies were you involved in?
The University of Leeds Unions is something I would love to mention about. The Leeds ball was one of the best of its kind I have ever attended. I was a frequently player of the Ping Pong Club at the Halls of Residences especially at St Marks Residences where I had an amazing time. The global Saturday trips to different places is an excellent opportunity to get to know different people coming from different cultures thereby broadening your mind in terms of socializing.
What would you say to students thinking about studying the same course at Leeds/thinking about the same career?
Doing a job should be something that contributes to the future generation and our planet earth. I always thought of doing something that brings innovative and sustainable solutions to people. I think I would advise my juniors to sit down for a moment and go through their passion in life and what they would like to contribute to the society in terms of their career. This is not a simple task but if you are willing to spend your time effectively and sincerely then you can design your own future accordingly. Engineering is something that involves challenges and if you are ready to get on this rollercoaster then this ride will definitely have ups and downs but you will reach your destination with rewards beyond imagination.
