- Programme manager: Mechatronics and Robotics MSc (Eng)
I am a Professor in Robotics and Autonomous Systems at the University of Leeds with nearly 30 years' experience in developing robots and mechatronic systems for manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, and food industries. I am passionate about discovering the fundamental science behind how the human brain works and developing effective robotics and brain computer interfaces for treating patients with neurological injuries. My major focus was on robot-assisted alignment of long bone fractures and limb rehabilitation, but have now extended this to a wider range of robot-assisted applications, such as exoskeleton and prosthetic devices, walking assistance, hip and knee replacement robots. My research was driven by a desire to see scientific findings, insights, and technologies used by patients to improve their quality of life.
I am fortunate to serve the international Mechatronics and Robotics community through various roles. I was the Technical Editor of IEEE/ASME Transaction on Mechatronics and the Associated Editor for the Mechatronics Journal-Elsevier. I was also the Editor-in-Chief for the International Journal of Biomechatronics and Biomedical Robotics; the Associate Editor of International Journal of Mechatronics and Manufacturing Systems, International Journal of Advanced Mechatronic Systems, and International Journal of Mechatronics and Intelligent Manufacturing. I have organized many reputable international conferences in Mechatronics and Robotics including ICIDM, MESA and AIM in New Zealand, China, Korea, Japan, Germany and the US.
I work closely with a number of governments and international agencies including FoRST, Marsden, PGSF (New Zealand), the World Health Organisation, Ministry of Social Development, the Royal Society, the NSERC Discovery grant/Partnership grant of Canada, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the National Science Foundation of Korea. I have the opportunity to lead many government funded research projects to solve real-world problems with innovative robotic technologies.
