Lingli Fu

Lingli Fu (Lily) completed her Masters degree in Engineering, Technology and Business Management in 2017. She is currently working in Dyson’s Shanghai office as an IT Senior Executive.

Postgraduate life at Leeds

From the very beginning, Lily knew that she would like to pursue a career in the technology industry, but with a good balance between technology and business. When she was doing her research into which course and university she wanted to attend, she found the Engineering, Technology and Business Management masters programme at Leeds to be one that ticked all the boxes.

She said, “the course was a new one when I made my application, but I found it to be very innovative and multidisciplinary, so I did not hesitate to accept my offer when it came through.

I didn’t even know much about Leeds, only that it’s a relatively big city in the UK. As the university is a single-site campus, and only a short walk from the Leeds city centre, I found it convenient to live in and made a lot of friends during my time here.”

Innovative teaching

“The programme and innovative teaching style gave me a brand new way of analysing technological trends from a different perspective. It inspired me a lot when I was thinking about my future career path.

My masters project was working on analysing Quantum Computer’s practical implementation in the near future. It was really exciting because it was an intense topic to learn about, but, my tutor, Professor Mohsen Razavi helped me a lot and was always willing to share his knowledge. He was available to give me the right guidance and advice whenever I needed it and always encouraging me to develop new ideas.”

The programme and innovative teaching style helped me see things from a different perspective. It inspired me a lot when I was thinking about my future career path.

Life after Leeds

After graduating from the University of Leeds, Lily travelled back home to China and moved to Shanghai after securing an IT graduate position at Dyson in their Shanghai office.

“The business training I received during my time at Leeds have allowed me to quickly pick up business terms used in corporations and the lectures I attended have vastly enriched my industry knowledge, so much so that I am able to learn and adapt to new technological concepts.

My time at Leeds have given the opportunity to experience the British working culture which has helped me to integrate into the international working environment.

I have had the opportunity to experience different roles and markets at Dyson. I have done Business Analysis, Project Management, Project Management Office (PMO) and I am currently working in the Global Data Service team.

My time at Leeds have also given me the opportunity to experience the British working culture, and this has definitely helped me to integrate into the international working environment for a British company like Dyson.”

Lily added, “One of my best memory of Leeds is admiring the beauty of Leeds at 5am during my final semester. Leeds at dawn is very beautiful. My stay at Leeds have been such a delight which I appreciate every day, and will cherish all the memories and friends I have made.”
