Why did you decide to study at the University of Leeds?
I am a sponsored student and thus, when choosing my firm and insurance universities on UCAS, I had to choose from the top 100 universities worldwide. The University of Leeds is one of the top universities by QS World Universities Ranking. I also knew a few seniors from college who studied there and they always said the University of Leeds has some of the best student support available and gives you a good learning experience. Without a doubt, I decided to choose the University of Leeds as my firm choice and, thankfully, I got an offer!
What has been the best aspect of studying here?
The lecturers are very supportive and helpful. They give me feedback on my lab reports and answer my questions on the modules. Whenever I email them, I get a fast reply – even on holidays! I also get to attend talks on how to write a better CV and about opportunities for summer internships.
Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed so far?
Last term, I worked on a project about material selection and another one about the production of a chemical. They are both group projects, so I often had meetings with my group members. I learnt how to use the CESEdupack software in order to complete one of my assignments. The best thing was that there were step-by-step instructions on how to use the software, so it was fun.
What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?
I would say that Leeds city centre has more opportunities than what any student needs. From John Lewis and the Victoria Gate shopping centre, to many interesting shops, food and entertainment. It's also only 15 minutes walking distance from the University of Leeds!
What are your ambitions for the future?
I have several options in mind after completing my MEng in Chemical Engineering. One of them is to go for a PhD program. I started writing lab reports this semester, which could be baby steps to that! It would also be interesting to work in the oil and gas industry, since it's always in high demand.
What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?
Communication and teamwork skills are important – and we’ve had several group projects and presentations on the course. These skills can be adapted and implemented in my career. The knowledge I gained throughout this course will also help me become a chemical engineer in the future.
What would you say to students coming to do the same course?
Enjoy learning the subjects the university offers and always attempt to finish your assignments before the deadline. Pay attention in all of your classes and practical sessions. Seek advice or improvements from your tutor as well, because he/she will be there to lend a helping hand. Don't forget that you can always get involved in any society's activities or become a volunteer, so you gain as much experience as possible while you are a student here!
