Why did you decide to study a masters at the University of Leeds?
I decided to study this course because it offers the opportunity to further my career by extending my skillset. Most of the modules are very relevant to my previous study and my current work as an Inspector Engineer at an oil refinery. Additionally, I chose this course because I am looking to diversify my knowledge in materials science by studying advanced subjects such as nanomaterials and functional materials which are involved in this course.
What has been the best aspect of studying on your course?
Most of the modules are supported by practicals, case studies and group assignments which improves my research and team working skills. This is enhanced by the friendly and supportive atmosphere in the university. The staff are very helpful and you can find clear guidance in your learning at any point.
Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed
The course involves individual and group projects throughout the course. I have completed a materials and processing selection project for blades, shift and nacelle of wind turbine. I am also part of a group project to develop a wearable device that can detect and measure allergy components in food by using near-infrared spectroscopy.
What does the city of Leeds have to offer students?
I chose Leeds because it is quite a big city that has a large student population and its people are used to internationals like me. It is easy to meet other international students from different cultures and you do not miss your local food as there is a wide spread of international restaurants and supermarkets. There is a variety of student accommodation and you can easily find some near the university. The city has a lot of beautiful places to visit such as parks, museums and shopping centres which are located not far from the university.
What would you say to students coming to do the same course?
Time management is essential, so you should always plan your time to meet deadlines while still having a chance to explore the beautiful city and the UK. You should try to have a deep understanding in your course materials and think how they are related to real-life situations.
