Umayah Tahsin

Umayah Tahsin studies Computer Science (Digital & Technology Solutions) BSc and is currently working in Robotics Process Automation on her placement at PwC.

Computing at Leeds

Umayah chose to study at the University of Leeds because it is a prestigious institution and highly valued by employers. She said, “The course that I am studying, sponsored by PwC, is only available to a select few Universities, Leeds being one of them, which was another reason for studying here.”

The best part of being on this course is the sense of community you get right from the start.

“The best part of being on this course is the sense of community you get right from the start. Being part of a small cohort in a huge course like computer science definitely helped me to settle in easier and find like-minded peers. Throughout the year we would occasionally meet in the Leeds office and have socials, including the Christmas party, which helped us stay well connected. Some of my closest friendships are with people studying on the same course which has made my overall experience at university enjoyable.”

“Another aspect is that the course includes two summer internships and a placement year in the third year of my degree. Having these integrated into the programme means that I don’t have to worry about applying to and securing internships or a placement year elsewhere!  This structure allows me to enjoy everything that student life has to offer, focusing on academics and the social aspects of University.”

Below Umayah talks about some of the project she has had the opportunity to work on both while studying and on her placements at PwC.

“In the second year, I developed a fitness web application as part of a group project where we practically applied what we had learned in Software Engineering such as Scrum, paired programming and agile software development.”

“For my first summer placement at PwC, I worked in Technology Consulting on a client project based in London. I worked on a thought leadership piece on how the client, who was in the consumer packaged goods industry, could leverage technology to improve their processes. I joined the Sales team to help deliver a full-scale digital transformation of their customer relation management platform.”

“I am currently in my industrial placement at PwC working in Robotics Process Automation (RPA). The work involves developing software robots that can complete on-screen, repetitive tasks as a way to reduce costs and improve quality and accuracy in a process.”

Living in Leeds

“Leeds has a great cultural scene where you can meet lots of different people and try something new. It has a thriving business and technology space with great employment prospects for graduates, particularly those in Computer Science.”

Looking forward

My placements at PwC have given me the opportunity to work across many teams within technology, provided me with quality training and a support network to allow me to achieve my goals.
