Muhammad Ahmad

Muhammad Ahmad is a third year student, currently studying Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence MEng, BSc at the School of Computing.

Moving to the UK was a big step for Muhammad Ahmad, whose family moved to the UK as refugees.

“My teachers, friends and family helped me along the way. I was part of the Reach for Excellence program (run by the University of Leeds) and this program allowed me to experience University activities.”

Muhammad Ahmad took part in various taster sessions and activities, however, he was “quite impressed by the atmosphere that the University of Leeds had. So, when deciding which universities to apply to, University of Leeds was an obvious choice.”

Choosing Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence

Muhammad Ahmad was introduced to programming and computers at quite a young age.

“I fondly remember my first console programs I made along with a calculator in Visual Basic: the sense of achievement I had was inexpressible.”

The best part of the CS with AI program is that it gives you a good grounding in the mathematical basis of Computer Science along with ample opportunities to apply these principles in practice.

Muhammad Ahmad highlights how this Computer Science course is both theoretical and practical. “Furthermore, there is a lot of room for choosing modules you like in the later years, so you can tailor your degree to your personal interests.”

Contributing to a better future

“Computers of all types make a huge part of our world, and this is only going to increase in the future. With the knowledge gained in this course, we can make a significant contribution in realising a better future.”

The skills learnt in this course are applicable to nearly every industry that uses computers, giving you a wide range of fields to utilise these skills in.

“Furthermore, as the technologies have and are continuously evolving, you will have no choice but to embark on a lifelong quest for knowledge, constantly evolving and improving your understanding of these technologies.”

Exciting projects

Muhammad Ahmad was able to successfully develop a multiplatform mobile application (for both Android and iOS devices) for an international organisation.

“I was the sole developer on the team and was able to contribute quite significantly to the design and ideation phase of the app as well.”

“The mobile application’s launch was very successful and currently the app is rated 5 stars on the Apple App Store and 4.6 stars on the Google Play Store.”

Future ambitions

Muhammad Ahmad hopes to utilise the knowledge and skills he has gained to make a significant contribution to the world.

“I want to be able to work in various sectors and not tied to a single technology or paradigm, particularly in projects that fall under the umbrella of ‘Artificial Intelligence’.”

“I also hope to be able to give back to society, so that I can lend help to others so that they can do the same in the future.”

Advice for future students

“My advice to future students will be to always remember why you are doing this course: hopefully, the reason will be because you find Computer Science fascinating.”

Above all, my advice would be to explore and enjoy this unique experience as much as possible, always looking at the bigger picture ahead.
