Outreach and public engagement

Schools outreach lab work

If you’re a student with a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), or you’re the teacher, parent, or carer of someone who finds the world of STEM as fascinating as we do, then read on to find out more about the events we organise and deliver throughout the year.

Our outreach events are an ideal opportunity to try out exciting activities, have fun and meet other like-minded people, as well as the chance to find out more about subjects and careers that could be perfect for you. Our activities are supported by undergraduate and postgraduate students who are always happy to answer your questions about what it’s like to study at Leeds.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) update

Our on-campus and in-school events are paused until further notice due to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. In place of these, the Education Outreach team is now offering a programme of online talks and workshops. To stay up to date with our programme you can join our mailing list by completing our quick form.

Schools outreach activities

Join us at subject taster days, summer schools, and teacher CPD. We offer the following activities, among others:

  • Taster Days – Ideal for GCSE and A-Level students who are interested in studying STEM subjects in higher education. Taster days offer students the chance to experience university life and see what it’s like to study at Leeds.
  • STEM lectures - An opportunity to hear from researchers in STEM and expand your knowledge in a range of topics including antibiotic resistance, marine science, climate and sports science, and meet our undergraduates to find out more about studying STEM degrees at Leeds.
  • Summer Schools – Suitable for Year 12 students, these courses provide an introduction to student life at the University of Leeds.

For more details of our activities visit the STEM website and subscribe to our newsletter.

In addition to subject specific activities, the Educational Engagement team work across the UK with schools and colleges to raise awareness of, and aspirations towards, higher education, offering a comprehensive programme of activities.

Online courses

We also have a range of free online courses across STEM. For example, the Discovering Science programme investigates how chemistry plays an important role in our everyday lives, and explores what the future holds for scientific discoveries.

Public engagement activities

The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences participates in a range of public engagement activities, bringing our cutting-edge scientific research to local and international communities.

Events include the Astbury Conversation, a biennial international conference at the interfaces between chemistry, biology and physics involving an exhibition, public lecture and laboratory masterclass for Year 12 and 13 school students. Be Curious is the University’s annual family-friendly research open day with fun activities, challenges and inspiring talks – offering something for everyone to enjoy.

Other engagement opportunities includes interactive events at Leeds Festival of Science, Leeds Light Night, Pint of Science and Soapbox Science
