Resource list

To help you prepare for studying in the School of Mechanical Engineering, we have gathered together some resources which you may find interesting and informative. However, there is no pre-requisite reading that needs to be done.

Online resources

TinkerCAD is a great, free, online tool to give you a head start on the basics of C++ programming. You can use it to:

  • Create virtual electronic circuits and connect them to a simulated Arduino which you can then program just like the real hardware
  • Experiment with the 3D design tools
  • Complete the various lessons available on the website or watch tutorial videos on their YouTube

Short online courses

Medical Technology Futures is a suite of five, free, online courses which cover topics such as digital medicine, genomics, personalised medicine, artificial intelligence, robotics and regenerative medicine. The ‘MedTech: Trends and Product Design’ course may be of particular interest.

Extra-curricular activities

Formula Student
From your first year at Leeds, you’ll have the opportunity to join the Leeds Gryphon Racing team, where you’ll help design and build a single-seat racing car and use this to compete in various international events. Our student-led team is competing in three categories: Combustion, Electric, and Autonomous vehicles. To find out more about the team, watch the Leeds Gryphon Racing F23 journey.
