Investigating the role of CO2 corrosion products in localised corrosion

In collaboration with Shell UK the project aims to study localised corrosion of carbon steel in sweet (CO2) oil and gas corrosion scenarios. The presence of high aspect ratio pits of several mm in depth remains a major concern in field.

The study addresses the role of corrosion products in stabilising and maintaining the activity of pits under large corrosion deposits (FECO3 and associated products).

Key questions addressed in this project is how this corrosion propagates and how efficient management strategies can be used to destabilise pitting corrosion under deposits.

Thus this project lies within the realms of both pitting corrosion and underdeposit corrosion.
