Overview
Medical engineering applies engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes. The field seeks to close the gap between engineering and medicine through multidisciplinary working – and engineering knowledge is also used to understand the body better, so that new and innovative tools can be developed for the medical community to improve the health and well-being of the population.
From biomaterials to joint replacement technology, this course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to advance healthcare treatments including monitoring, diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation.
We have an international reputation for our expertise in medical engineering, and we are part of the Leeds Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering which acts as a focus for training and research in hospitals and at the University.
Our active Industrial Advisory Board helps inform the development of this course to ensure that it is up to date with industry developments and requirements. This is one of the reasons why our graduates are so in demand by industry.

Programme team
Dr Anthony Herbert is Programme Leader for Medical Engineering. He is a lecturer in Medical and Biological Engineering in the School of Mechanical Engineering. His research focuses on the mechanical characterisation of biological materials, decellularisation of biological materials, bioreactor design and manufacture, and experimental and mathematical modelling.
He is a chartered engineer (CEng) and a chartered scientist (CSci), a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine. Dr Herbert was the recipient of the 2018 British Orthopaedic Research Society International Travel fellowship and the 2018 UK Society for Biomaterials Young Investigator award.
The wider programme team is made up of academics and researchers from across the School of Mechanical Engineering, who work within the School’s research institutes and groups.
Specialist facilities
You’ll benefit from our extensive lab space and equipment for subjects including: solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, engine testing and thermofluids, as well as control and dynamics. You will have access to our high-spec CAD cluster and workshop facilities including various advanced rapid prototyping systems.
We offer dedicated LabView facilities and training, which combines face-to-face teaching with hands-on lab exercises, which will build your skills in using the visual programming software LabVIEW, created by National Instruments.

Enhancing your degree
You can choose to take either the four-year Integrated Masters (MEng, BEng) or the three-year Bachelor’s (BEng) degree on this course.
During your time at Leeds, you can decide to study abroad or undertake an industrial placement. It’s also possible to transfer to a four-year Integrated Masters (MEng, BEng) degree up until the end of your second year.
Online taster courses
Our Medical Technology Futures collection is a five-part series of free online courses, delivered via FutureLearn, that introduces you to the exciting future of medical device design and engineering. Covering topics like digital medicine, artificial intelligence, robotics and genomics, this series offers a great taste of what it's like to study product engineering at undergraduate level.
Accreditation
This course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council.
Accreditation is the assurance that a university course meets the quality standards established by the profession for which it prepares its students. An accredited mechanical engineering course must meet the quality standards set by the IMechE.
The MEng, BEng course is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). Once you have graduated with your MEng degree, you will usually be required to have a minimum of three years industrial experience before you can apply for your chartered status.
The BEng is accredited as partially satisfying the educational base for CEng status. A course of accredited further learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng.
Course content
The first two years of our degree courses share the same set of compulsory modules, giving you the flexibility to switch between our different degrees. In years three and four you’ll take modules in your chosen specialism.
Years one and two
You’ll study compulsory modules to establish the core mechanical engineering principles required for all branches of mechanical engineering. You’ll also undertake design and manufacture projects. In your first year you will construct a ‘bio-arm’ to throw a ball containing accelerometers into a movable target and in your second year will take part in world-class ‘The Daring Dash’, sponsored by National Instruments and Jaguar Land Rover. The challenge is to build an autonomous, electric-powered buggy to travel over an uneven course and stop on a bull’s-eye.
Since many engineers go on to positions where they have management responsibilities, you’ll also develop your knowledge of business practices by studying Economics and Management, taught by the Leeds University Business School.
Year three
You’ll build on these foundations in year three, when you’ll take specialist medical engineering modules. These will allow you to explore Structure and Function of the Body and Biomedical Engineering Design, and consider a medical device from conception through regulatory approval to delivery to the market (and ultimately the patient). There is also an opportunity to study with the University’s medical physicists and learn more about specific medical imaging modalities such as X-Ray and MRI.
Your third year project will be a large individual research project, where you can get involved in an area of current research within the School and will be assigned an academic supervisor for guidance and support.

Year four (MEng)
If you continue into year four to take the MEng qualification, you’ll select masters-level medical engineering modules allowing you to focus on topics that suit your interests and career plans. In addition to the taught modules, year four consists of a group project, usually in conjunction with leading companies that are members of the Industrial Advisory Board.

At the end of year two, you can decide if you’d like to complete an industrial placement or study abroad year, which will extend your degree by 12 months.
Projects
In each year of your course, you will gain hands-on experience of project work as part of the design and manufacture modules. These and other project activities give you the opportunity to explore your subject further as well as developing valuable skills in problem solving, communication and teamwork.

Learning and teaching
You’ll benefit from our integrated style of learning and teaching. Laboratory classes, project work, and industry sponsored fieldwork allow you to gain hands-on experience investigating and applying material from your lectures and tutorials to real life work situations. We also organise industrial visits and offer additional seminars delivered by practising engineers and other professionals. Our close links with industry also mean that you will have direct contact with industry and potential employers from an early stage in your course.
You will have a designated personal tutor throughout your studies at Leeds, who will be an academic member of staff. You will have fortnightly academic tutorials with your tutor throughout your first two years, in your tutor group (of typically 5 students), as well as one-to-one meetings twice per semester. In addition, our excellent student support team is based close to where you’ll work and study to help with anything from academic advice to timetabling and project submission enquiries. You will also receive support from fellow students through our peer mentoring scheme.
Our Virtual Learning Environment will help to support your studies: it’s a central place where you can find all the information and resources for the School, your programme and modules.
You can also benefit from support to develop your academic skills, within the curriculum and through online resources, workshops, one-to-one appointments and drop-in sessions.
On this course, you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.
Assessment
You will be assessed through both written examinations, held at the end of each year, and through coursework in the form of reports, projects, presentations and posters.
Entry requirements, fees and applying
Entry requirements
A-level: A*AA including Mathematics and either Physics, Chemistry or Biology. The A* must be in Mathematics or Physics if presented.
Where an A-level Science subject is taken, we require a pass in the practical science element, alongside the achievement of the A-level at the stated grade.
Excludes A-level General Studies or Critical Thinking.
Extended Project Qualification and International Project Qualification: Whilst we recognise the value of these qualifications and the effort and enthusiasm that applicants put into them, we do not currently include them as part of our offer-making. We do, however, encourage you to provide further information on your project in your personal statement.
GCSE: English Language at grade C (4) or above, or an appropriate English language qualification. We will accept Level 2 Functional Skills English in lieu of GCSE English.

Pass 60 credits overall with 45 credits at Level 3, with Distinction, to include Mathematics, Calculus, Further Calculus and Physics, Chemistry or Biology.

DDD (RQF) in an Engineering-related BTEC and a grade A in A Level Mathematics.
We cannot consider BTEC qualifications without A Level Mathematics and do not accept BTEC Maths units in lieu of this A Level requirement

International students who do not meet the academic requirements for undergraduate study may be able to study the University of Leeds International Foundation Year. Tuition fees for UK undergraduate students starting in 2024/25
Tuition fees for UK full-time undergraduate students are set by the UK Government and will be £9,250 for students starting in 2024/25.
The fee may increase in future years of your course in line with inflation only, as a consequence of future changes in Government legislation and as permitted by law.

Study abroad and work placements
Study abroad
On this course you have the opportunity to apply to spend time abroad, usually as an extra academic year. We have over 300 University partners worldwide and popular destinations for our students include Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa and Latin America.
The optional study abroad year takes place between years two and three and will extend your studies by 12 months. You will return to Leeds to complete your final year of study.

An industrial placement year is a great way to help you decide what kind of career you might like when you graduate. As well as giving you the opportunity to develop your skills, you’ll gain a real insight into working life in a particular company or sector.
With the help and support of our dedicated Employability team, you can choose to undertake a salaried industrial placement year at one of the 100+ companies that we work with. If you decide to undertake a placement year this will extend your period of study by 12 months and, on successful completion, you will be awarded the ‘industrial’ variant in your degree title to demonstrate your added experience to future employers.
During your industrial placement you will have an industrial supervisor from within the company, plus an academic supervisor who will keep in touch throughout your placement.
As a BEng student you have the option to undertake the placement between years two and three. MEng, BEng students can choose to do this either between years two and three or years three and four.
