You will study 180 credits in total during your Water, Sanitation and Health Engineering MSc (Eng). A standard module is typically worth 15 credits and the dissertation is worth 60 credits. These are the modules relating to this programme of study for academic year 2020/21. If you are starting in September 2021, these will give you a flavour of the modules you are likely to study. MSc Dissertation - 60 credits
You will undertake a research/design based project throughout the course.
Key Issues in International Health - 15 credits
Provides an understanding of the key issues in international health. You will develop an understanding of the key players in international health, historical developments and current priorities. You will also explore key and emerging public health issues and examine how these shape international health practice.
The Management of WASH Projects - 15 credits
Will equip you with the skills to select and design appropriate programmatic responses to prevailing public health challenges, including a range of engineering and subsidiary interventions.
Engineering for Public Health - 15 credits
Introduces the technical responses to WASH-related development challenges. You will develop an understanding of the range of technologies that can be used to provide water supply, sanitation and hygiene services in rural and urban areas of the global south.
Water Resource Management - 15 credits
Presents the principles of integrated water resources management and introduces the tools and regulations of water resources management. This module covers the development of outline water management plans for typical rural and urban basins, the principles of urban drainage and sustainable urban drainage.
Wastewater and Fecal Sludge Management - 15 credits
Provides a broad ranging overview of elements of natural wastewater and fecal sludge treatment systems and wastewater reuse. It also includes the design approaches for waste stabilization ponds; rock filters and constructued wetlands. Major natural wastewater treatment processes are covered in detail with the aim to deliver a comprehensive approach to public health engineering solutions in low-income countries, small communities and peri-urban areas, including wastewater and sludge reuse.
Solid Waste Management - 15 credits
Provides an understanding of the characteristics of waste and its generation rates, waste collection including recycling, and the science and engineering aspects of landfill, biological treatment and thermal treatment options. On completion of this module, you will also be able to produce outline designs for treatment plants and understand the operation and design of emission control systems for the various solid waste treatment options.
Engineering in Emergencies – MSc - 15 credits
Engineering responses to complex emergencies. The particular focus is on appropriate engineering interventions to provided minimum sanitary services and water but it also covers the interaction between engineering, medical services, security and food provision.
Water Supply - 15 credits
Provides an understanding of water supply systems including point sources and resources as well as the development and productive use of groundwater sources. Develop principles of hydrogeology and water treatment.
