50th Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology

Tribological Challenges Underpinning the Innovations of the Next 50 Years
Tuesday 2 – Thursday 4 September 2025, University of Leeds, UK

Over five decades, the Leeds-Lyon Symposia have been a platform through which many groundbreaking research achievements have been disseminated, underpinning innovations in all aspects of advanced tribological systems. The experimental, analytical, and computational research tools developed by research groups around the world are now being used to address tribological challenges related to new technologies such as electric vehicles, hydrogen engines, the tribology of materials used in extreme conditions, coatings, biomedical technologies, nanomaterials, lubrication, etc. The 50th Leeds-Lyon Symposium provides us with a great opportunity to review the achievements in the last fifty years of the symposium with the aim of addressing current challenges in tribology and looking into tribology prospects and new challenges of the next fifty years to come.

The 50th Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology invites all the researchers to share their latest work in a stimulating, engaging and dynamic environment. We aim to capture the exciting original research in all areas of tribology, with a special focus on tribology challenges relevant to technologies that will define the next fifty years. Offerings of original research are requested in (but not limited to) the following areas:

  • Tribochemistry and green lubricants
  • Tribology of materials used in new transport technologies such as electric vehicles and hydrogen engines
  • Surface engineering, coatings and tribology in extreme environments
  • Tribology of soft materials
  •  Biotribology
  • Tribology-driven contact and interface processes
  • Surface morphology, multiscale and fractal surfaces
  • Machining, wear, fatigue and fretting
  • Machine learning research tools in tribology
  • Tribology of composites, coatings and novel materials
  • Advanced measurement and simulation methods

History
These symposia are jointly sponsored by the University of Leeds (UK) and the Institut National des Sciences Appliquèes (INSA) de Lyon, Université de Lyon (France). The inaugural symposium was held in 1974 and since then there has been an annual meeting in the month of September, the sponsoring Institutions acting as hosts on alternate occasions. After 49 successful events, the symposium has become an established event in the international tribology calendar. Each year the symposium provides an opportunity to tribologists and those working in related fields to discuss and assimilate recent advances of tribology and to exchange views and ideas on a broader basis. Combining both breadth and depth the symposium will provide an outstanding forum to review recent advances in tribology and applied surface science and to examine the contribution these areas can make to a sustainable future.
