- Course: Computer Science with Mathematics BSc
Liam Ward studies Computer Science with Mathematics BSc and has already secured a job for when he graduates after completing a summer placement.
Liam always wanted to study at the University of Leeds and was just a matter of which course to take. He said “Up until the moment I got my A-Level results I was enrolled to do mathematics. However, in my final year in college I took a course in IT in which I learned a great deal about the inner workings of computers.
Along with this, my interest in computers and video games from an early age led me to possibly look for a course in IT or computer science. When I saw that there was a course that combines computers science and mathematics, I decided that was the best option for me and so I decided to change courses.”
Computing at Leeds
The best aspect of this course is that it has allowed me to learn programming, which in turn has allowed me to get a job that I thoroughly enjoy and pays well.
We asked Liam what the best aspect of studying computing at Leeds was. He said “The best aspect of this course is that it has allowed me to learn programming, which in turn has allowed me to get a job that I thoroughly enjoy and pays well. I started my job as summer intern at a Software Development company called Audacia Consulting based in Leeds City Centre.”
He added “At the end of my internship they asked me if I would like to continue working there to gain more experience, which I accepted as I knew I would need as much understanding as possible and I am guaranteed a job at the end of my studies. This has been the best aspect for me because getting a job in the industry is the entire aim for me of going to university and to have one sorted before I have even finished is fantastic.”
Whatever your interests, there is plenty to explore in Leeds. Liam said “There are various student nights out along with shopping events where they offer extra discounts exclusively to students. Apart from that, it also has great transport links if you want to stay in the immediate area, like me, I have been living in an area that is not typically populated with students and I am still able to navigate easily every day.”
Studying a degree in the School of Computing enables you to develop the key skills for a successful career in all kinds of exciting industries. We asked Liam what his ambitions are for the future. He said “My ambitions for the future are to continue working at the company I am currently employed at for a few years until I have enough experience. When I think I have enough, I want to start up my own company. This will be with the view of being able to work from home, so I can travel and work from other countries, so I can define my own hours and work in comfort.”
Advice and tips
We asked Liam if he had any advice or tips for future students. He said “Find courses that you enjoy rather than ones that you will learn the most from, because if you don't enjoy you won't be able to learn it. Start looking for internships from the end of your first year as you never know what it might lead to.
Lastly, if you enjoy programming based modules then that is great as that is most likely the area that you will get a job in after university, if not then don't worry too much this sector is one of the most prosperous and there are companies everywhere looking for people with a degree in computer science.”
