Why did you decide to study MEng, BEng Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Leeds?

I have always been interested in Civil Engineering but calculating beams and columns was not very appealing to me. This is why I started researching on different spheres of Engineering and realized how fascinating Environmental Engineering is. It can offer so much in the context of diversity of the projects you can work on and opportunities to make a change - to provide a better and more sustainable world.

What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University and why?

The best aspect is that all the courses broaden your knowledge. I became much more passionate about what I study and was inspired to research it in my free time. This course helped me meet very interesting people and make some very important contacts as part of the societies and different events that I have attended.

Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed so far?

I have worked on quiet a few interesting ones but the most exciting were

  • A field trip where we built housing (a house, a pit latrine, water tank) with sustainable materials with techniques used in some developing countries
  • A geology field trip and workshop when we visited a quarry, investigated the rocks and planned the geological works prior to building construction.

What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?

Leeds is a very vibrant city, one of the favorite places I have ever been and can offer a huge variety of food, clubs, museums and other things. There are a lot of free events and activities as well, but I think the most important things is the people. I have met so many interesting people from different backgrounds and have learnt so much from them.

What are your ambitions for the future?

I am planning to work in the area of sustainable engineering and to become a Chartered Engineer.

What Experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?

As a student at  Leeds, i had the opportunity to apply for placements and internships advertised only for us. This is a huge advantage and as a result I am undertaking a Summer Placement with the biggest engineering consultancy - ARUP, this year.

What would you say to students coming to do the same course?

It is not easy, you need to be prepared to put a lot of effort in, but it is worth every minute.
