The Architecture MEng, BEng programme is unique in the UK, in being a synthesis of architectural, structural and building physics design. Each of these disciplines is treated as an integral part of the total process involved in building design, rather than as separate subjects. Technical and creative aspects of learning are demonstrated and explored through individual design projects.

Following a brief but intense period working in New Zealand, I joined the University in 2010, having spent 20 years before that working in professional practice as an architect. I have designed award winning buildings in the UK and abroad, including schools and university buildings. As design champion for Atkins UK, I was able to learn the advantages of a more integrated approach to design, which is a big inspiration to my role here.

Design and design led teaching remain key to my role as programme lead for Architecture. I retain an active design role for a small number of housing projects, including the Chapeltown Cohousing project in Leeds. I believe, from my experience, that the process of designing buildings equips students in a uniquely excellent way for a future in the building industry – as an architect or as an engineer, or both!
