Why did you decide to study your particular course?
Having immersed myself in the world of technology from a young age and starting to learn my first programming language from the age of 10, I knew I wanted to study a technical degree. The course has a strong focus on the fundamentals underpinning the field, whilst balancing this with applying the knowledge with specific tasks and programming languages. This style of learning means your knowledge does not become outdated, and you understand the inner workings of the tools which you use.
Why did you choose the University of Leeds?
Leeds has a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere when I really noticed when visiting on open days. The University is well-integrated with the city, and there is never a lack of something to do in between your studies.Coupled with an excellent reputation with employers and when measured against other Universities, Leeds really seemed like the ideal choice.
What was the best aspect of the course/the University and why?
On the course, I enjoyed exposure to areas of research which I had never before considered, such as ‘Bio-Inspired Computing’, in which we found new and creative ways to solve problems. I found this has taught me a new way of thinking and learning, and as a result I have been able to take these ideas forward to my work, and provide new and unique perspectives on problems in industry.
What are you doing now, what does your job involve?
I am about to start my first year as an analyst on HSBC’s prestigious Global Banking & Markets Technology Graduate Scheme in Canary Wharf which largely deals with technology requirements in an area of the bank which would traditionally be referred to as ‘investment banking’. This is a fast-paced and intensive graduate scheme which runs over a period of two years, in which I will gain exposure to vast, complex IT systems and become proficient both commercially and technically as an analyst within the bank.
How did your course help/how will it help your future career?
The University has given me the confidence and tools and needed to succeed in a notoriously tough industry. The course has taught me the analytical skills I need, along with providing the opportunity to work on a project for a semester, building on skills such as presentation giving, report writing, time management, project management and liaising with stakeholders which are useful commercially.
What would you say to students thinking about coming to do the same course?
Computer Scientists have opportunities to work in almost any industry, and the University of Leeds Computer Science degree provides everything you need to succeed. I would strongly recommend balancing academic study with work experience, and getting involved in extra-curricular activities. This will give you the CV, the knowledge and the confidence to do almost anything you want when you graduate.
