Computing at Leeds
Our degrees let you benefit from an active research environment and the wealth of experience in the School of Computing. We spoke to Jonathan about why he chose Leeds. He said “I chose the University of Leeds because of its Russell group status and friendly, committed lecturers. It is also a fantastic city to live in and has great connections to other big cities for when you need to travel.
From his time on the course so far, we asked what the best aspect had been. Jonathan said ‘The opportunity to do as much work as you want. There are lots of extra activities and opportunities to take part in, and many business links for future jobs.”
Summer internship
After his first year of study Jonathan undertook a summer internship. We asked him about it and he said “My summer internship was working with Dr Levesley and Dr Gallagher on rehabilitation games development for the MyPAM. We have used Unity to create a game that can be used to help people recover from strokes.”
Student life
Leeds is one of the country's largest and fastest-growing cities and has a leading reputation in business, culture and sport. The city has a lot to offer to students and ur campus is also just a 10-minute walk from the vibrant city centre. Jonathan said when we asked him what he enjoyed about Leeds as a city “Great travel links, plenty of gig venues, bars, nightclubs, pubs, shopping centres, restaurants, sports/music facilities and cinemas.”
Looking forward
Doing a summer internship is one of the best things you can do. As well as a year in industry, it will show future employers that you have got more experience and are proactive at getting new opportunities for yourself.
Throughout your time with us our dedicated faculty Employability Team are here to support, guide and advise you on your next steps. We asked Jonathan what his ambitions were after graduating. He said “I would like to continue work for the MyPAM next summer if more development is needed. I would also like to finish my masters for High Performance Graphics and have a year in industry in which I can gain a better understanding of where I would like to work in the future.

Advice and tips
We asked Jonathan what he would say to future students. He said “This is a great course to learn about all the maths behind 3d graphics and optimisation techniques. But also gives a solid foundation of computer science, giving flexibility between different disciplines in the future.”
