Leeds Researcher Wins International Civil Engineering Award

Dr Costas Velis, from the School of Civil Engineering, has won the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) Publication Award 2013.

It recognises the outstanding publication in the solid waste field worldwide.

His article "An analytical framework and tool (‘InteRa’) for integrating the informal recycling sector in waste and resource management systems in developing countries”, published in the journal Waste Management and Research, deals with the importance of the informal recycling sector—poor people processing waste outside the commercial system—to waste disposal in developing countries. It offers a practical framework for designing initiatives to integrate this sector into formal waste management systems.
