When science hits the headlines: how the Science Media Centre can help you
- Date: Monday 13 May 2024, 10:30 – 12:00
- Location: Esther Simpson Building, Lyddon Terrace, Woodhouse, Leeds LS2
- Cost: Free
On Monday 13 May, Fiona Lethbridge from the Science Media Centre (SMC) will give a free talk on why journalists need scientists to help them report accurately, and how academics can get involved.
It'll be a great event for academics, technicians, and PhD students interested in how the media works - particularly if their research/subject area is something they believe journalists are (or should be) interested in. It'll also focus on how staff and students can help journalists report research better.
The talk will be in the Esther Simpson Lecture Theatre (1.01) and will include examples of when controversial science has hit the headlines, and the difference scientists can make. Fiona Lethbridge and the University press office will discuss how we can help you communicate your own research to the public via the national news media.
A University of Leeds researcher will also speak about their recent experience working with the Science Media Centre on a controversial subject and the media response.
