University of Leeds named best in UK for civil engineering
The University of Leeds has been named the best place in the UK to study civil engineering in the Guardian University Guide 2027.
The School of Civil Engineering ranked first in the country for the subject, while architecture, also delivered by the School, placed third.
The civil engineering table recorded 91% student satisfaction with teaching and 84.7% satisfaction with feedback. The School has focused on responding to feedback, improving teaching satisfaction and strengthening its student-staff partnership.
The Guardian University Guide ranks UK universities overall and by subject using eight measures covering the student experience and graduate outcomes. These include satisfaction with teaching and feedback, student-to-staff ratios, spending per student, continuation and career prospects.
Leeds rose two places to 26th in the overall table. The University improved its scores in five of the guide’s eight measures, with satisfaction levels for teaching and feedback both increasing.
Head of School, Professor Carlo Prato, said: “League tables should not define a School, but it is important to recognise what sits behind a result like this. Staff and students have worked closely to improve teaching and respond to feedback, and I am very proud of what we have achieved together. This recognition reflects the commitment shown to our students every day.”

It’s a result of the ongoing dedication from both academic and support staff, and a commitment to working in partnership with our student representatives over many years.
