Undergraduate life at Leeds
Thomas chose to study at the University of Leeds because of its excellent reputation. He added, “The fact that it is a campus university was an added bonus and the city itself is also great for students in terms of social life and the cost of living.”
I chose to study at the University of Leeds because of its excellent reputation.
Aside from joining ChemSoc (Chemistry Society), Thomas was also an active member of the Leeds RAG society, Leeds Snowriders and the Leeds Peer Mentoring Programme.
During his final year, he undertook a research project on meteoric ablation under the supervision of Professor John Plane. The paper, “A novel instrument to measure differential ablation of meteorite samples and proxies – The Meteoric Ablation Simulator (MASI)” which he was a co-author, was published in the American Institute of Physics.
Year abroad in Hungary
“One of the best aspect of my course was the opportunity to study abroad during my third year”, said Thomas. “I studied at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary and chose this destination as Budapest is one of my favourite cities. It’s a culturally rich city, full of history and life.”
Budapest is a culturally rich city, full of history and life.
Studying abroad was a beneficial and rewarding experience for Thomas. He learnt about Chemistry from a different perspective and studied modules in branches of Chemistry that he would not have had the opportunity to explore in Leeds, namely green chemistry and environmental chemistry. He added, “As a result of studying abroad, I would like to live and work abroad.”
My advice for students considering studying abroad is to go for it! You only live once and it’ll be a truly eye opening experience.
The future
“My experience at Leeds has indeed helped me in my career. The Chemistry course was demanding in terms of workload, and this has helped hone my time management skills.” He added, “If you are passionate about Chemistry, then definitely choose Leeds. The School is very friendly and everyone is always happy to help.”
