Dr Thomas Moore

Dr Thomas Moore

Profile

Thomas Moore is an Associate Professor in Condensed Matter Physics.  He obtained his PhD at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, and was subsequently a Marie Curie Research Fellow at the University of Konstanz, Germany, and postdoctoral research fellow at Spintec and the Institut Neel in Grenoble, France, before arriving in Leeds as a lecturer in 2010.  He is Chair of the Institute of Physics Magnetism Group.

Research interests

His research is in nanomagnetism and spintronics. In the Condensed Matter group we deposit ultrathin layers of magnetic materials such as iron, cobalt and nickel and use nanofabrication techniques to pattern them into nanostructures. We are interested both in the fundamental physics of magnetic nanostructures and in applications in electronic devices which exploit the spin of the electron.  Tom pioneered current-driven magnetic domain wall motion in multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy.  He is currently a partner in the EU Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie ITN “MagnEFi” studying electric field effects on magnetism.  His interests span the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, skyrmions, spin-orbit torques and the effect of piezoelectric strain on thin magnetic films.

Current PhD students are: Khulaif Alshammari, Yanjiang Ji (joint with SUSTech), Robbie Hunt and Jintao Shuai.

New PhD opportunities for autumn 2021 start include a Bragg studentship (“Stress controlled antiferromagnetism for low energy electronics” with Prof AJ Bell), as well as the “Strain control of ferrimagnets” project below.
