Thomas Moore is an Associate Professor in Condensed Matter Physics. He obtained his PhD at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, and was subsequently a Marie Curie Research Fellow at the University of Konstanz, Germany, and postdoctoral research fellow at Spintec and the Institut Neel in Grenoble, France, before arriving in Leeds as a lecturer in 2010. He is Chair of the Institute of Physics Magnetism Group.
His research is in nanomagnetism and spintronics. In the Condensed Matter group we deposit ultrathin layers of magnetic materials such as iron, cobalt and nickel and use nanofabrication techniques to pattern them into nanostructures. We are interested both in the fundamental physics of magnetic nanostructures and in applications in electronic devices which exploit the spin of the electron. Current interests are thin magnetic films with perpendicularly oriented magnetization, domain walls, skyrmions, and hybrid piezoelectric/magnetic structures.
