Lecturer Samantha wins award for inspiring and guiding students

Excellent student support, demonstrated by Dr Samantha Pugh, was praised at the Leeds Partnership Awards. She received the award for encouraging students to excel in their studies.

The Supervisor Award is given to a dissertation, final year project, or thesis supervisor who has guided and inspired students to push the boundaries of their research.

Dr Pugh was delighted to receive this accolade at the Leeds Partnership Awards, which were held in April. She said:

“My approach to supervision is to care about the students and care about their research – in that order, which is the important part.

“I also help them to find opportunities that will both enhance their time in Leeds and improve their future career prospects whenever possible.”

Supervisor Award

A student supervised by Samantha said:

“Samantha speaks to people at every opportunity about my work and then puts me in touch with them. She has also been so dedicated to both her field as well as supporting work through the disciplinary lenses I use with which she may not be completely familiar.

“I feel genuinely encouraged and as if she truly has my best interest at heart. She treats me with equality, respect and dignity.”

Dr Pugh is a Leeds Institute for Teaching Excellence Fellow, and was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship last year. She is also a member of the Physics Education Research Group (PERG), which is a growing area of research in the School.
