Leeds welcomes global medical imaging experts at world-leading MIUA 2025 Conference

The University of Leeds proudly hosted the 29th Conference on Medical Image Understanding and Analysis (MIUA 2025), drawing more than 150 researchers from 23 countries.

The event, which took place from 15 to 17 July, was chaired by Dr Sharib Ali and Professor David Hogg from the School of Computer Science, alongside Professor Michelle Peckham from the School of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and explored the latest advancements in medical and biomedical image analysis.

It also marked a significant milestone – this was the second time Leeds hosted MIUA, after it held the second outing for the conference in 1998. Professor Hogg was also one of four people chairing the event, which followed the first-ever MIUA at the University of Oxford in 1997.

MIUA serves as a vital platform for fostering collaboration and innovation in the field. This year’s conference featured 99 high-quality research presentations, including 45 orals and 54 posters. The proceedings of 67 full papers have been published in Springer Nature’s Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS), while 32 abstract contributions are being published in Frontiers in Medical Technology.

The conference also emphasised inclusivity and career development, offering a Doctoral Consortium for PhD students, panel discussions for early career researchers (ECRs), and ample networking opportunities for academia and industry professionals.

Two distinguished keynote speakers – Professor Andrew King (King’s College London) and Professor Sue Astley (University of Manchester) – delivered inspirational talks, sharing their deep expertise and vision for the future of medical imaging.

Attendees praised the event for its scientific quality, welcoming atmosphere, and opportunities for meaningful engagement, making MIUA 2025 a resounding success, and Leeds hopes to welcome delegates back for a third time in the future.
