Leeds alum receives prestigious Women in STEM award from Anne, Princess Royal
A Leeds Chemistry PhD alum has been selected as one of only two recipients of the prestigious UK-Thailand Women in STEM Awards 2026.
Dr Chadamas Sakonsinsiri, who completed her studies at Leeds in 2016, received the award from Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, at a ceremony in Bangkok.
Dr Sakonsinsiri completed her PhD in the School of Chemistry under the supervision of Professor Bruce Turnbull before returning to Thailand, where she established a multidisciplinary research programme at Khon Kaen University focused on cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Her work combines biochemistry, chemical biology and nanotechnology to develop innovative nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems and fluorescent nanomaterials, with a particular focus on cholangiocarcinoma, a highly prevalent cancer in north-east Thailand.
The award will support a research visit to the University of Leeds, where Dr Sakonsinsiri will work with Professor Turnbull and colleagues to strengthen collaborations in cancer nanomedicine, glycoscience, and targeted drug delivery.
Reflecting on her career, Dr Sakonsinsiri credits her time at Leeds with providing invaluable experience in an international research environment and highlighting the importance of global scientific partnerships in addressing major healthcare challenges.
Alongside her research achievements, she is also committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists, particularly supporting women in STEM.
