Thoughts on a problem of Halmos

Professor Bill Ross (University of Richmond) will present his research in Analysis.

Paul Halmos asked if the classical Cesaro operator has a square root. Using subnormality results of Kriete and Trutt, Conway and Olin showed that indeed the Cesaro operator has a square root. In this joint work with M. Ptak and J. Mashreghi, we use some matrix factorization results of Hausdorff to give specific formulas for the square roots of the Cesaro operator.

The talks are held using Zoom. Anyone interested in attending (outside the School of Mathematics) should email Ben Sharp at b.g.sharp@leeds.ac.uk to request zoom coordinates.
