Pohozaev-type identities play a central role in a number of nonexistence theorems for elliptic PDEs. They are also at the heart of blow-up analysis for a class of semilinear parabolic equations. Typically they are obtained via the “multiply and integrate” procedure where the choice of a correct multiplier may require some thought. When the equation is of variational origin and the domain does not have a boundary, useful multipliers may be easily identified through special variations of the action functional. In my talk I will describe, through suitable domain variations, how boundary value problems may be included in this variational picture.
