Inclusion takes centre stage at EDI Hub+ annual conference

Nearly 200 delegates gathered in Leeds and online to explore how inclusive research practices can reshape Engineering, Physical and Mathematical Sciences (EPMS).

The EDI Hub+ Annual Conference 2026 brought together researchers, sector leaders, and practitioners from across the UK to examine how evidence-led approaches can strengthen inclusion across the EPMS landscape. Co-founded by the University of Leeds, EDI Hub+ used the event to showcase emerging interventions, national strategy, and community-led action designed to support lasting cultural change.

The conference also marked the launch of the EPSRC EDI Action Plan 2026-2029 by Professor Charlotte Deane, Executive Chair of EPSRC. Speaking at the event, Professor Louise Jennings, joint lead of EDI Hub+, described the launch as an important moment for connecting national ambitions with the practical work already underway across the sector.

The event also introduced the first EDI Hub+-funded projects, covering themes such as inclusive leadership, reasonable adjustments, flexible career pathways, and STEM-specific EDI training. Alongside these presentations, lightning talks explored topics including disability access in laboratories, LGBTQ+ inclusion in STEM, and mentoring initiatives across career stages.

Panel discussions focused on how successful interventions can move beyond pilot schemes to create systemic change. Delegates examined the role of leadership, collaboration, and long-term investment in embedding inclusive practices across institutions and disciplines.

The conference also marked the launch of the EDI Hub+ Inclusion Advocates network, aimed at strengthening connections and sharing expertise across the national EPMS community.
