Heroes of Energy: How Leeds champions the future of farming at the National Pig Centre
The University of Leeds is at the forefront of sustainable agriculture innovation, as showcased in a new video featuring the National Pig Centre.
A new six-minute video, filmed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) at our facility in North Yorkshire, highlights our groundbreaking research in decarbonisation and renewable energy, and how academia and industry can work together to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in modern farming.
Central to this effort is Professor Kang Li, Chair of Smart Energy Systems in the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. In the video, Professor Li explains how advanced energy solutions, including microgrids and renewable energy integration, are being deployed to reduce emissions and support the farm’s journey toward net zero. In turn, these can reduce the reliance on external energy sources, promoting sustainability in rural communities.
The National Pig Centre, which opened in 2019, prides itself on offering a place for researchers to collaborate across disciplines, specifically those in the Faculty of Biological Sciences; in the video, Professor Li is joined by FBS colleagues Dr Katie McDermott and Dr Gesa Reiss, underscoring the variety of expertise needed to face such a critical project.
