SCAPE Present at International Workshop on "Artificial Intelligence Assisted Chemistry"
The team from the University of Leeds presented applications of machine learning to aid in the destruction of chemical warfare agents.
Professor Richard Bourne (SCAPE), Dr Tom Chamberlain (Chemistry) and Dr Pia Mueller (SCAPE) made a presentation at the International Workshop on "Artificial Intelligence Assisted Chemistry", held in The Hague, Netherlands on 16th-17th June 2022.
Aside from their presentation, members from the university’s team were actively involved in discussions of future safeguards for potential dual-use applications of artificial intelligence.
Professor Richard Bourne spoke on “Self-Optimising Reactors for Industry 4.0 Process Development”. He said that compared to conventional methods, self-optimizing reactors
- provide a cheaper, faster and greener route to reaction optimization
- enhance researcher capabilities by removing the need for labour intensive experimentation
- align with growing use of flow chemistry in the chemicals and pharmaceuticals industry
He also gave an example in which 46 experiments were conducted in 37 hours using only 200 mg of the substrate per experiment.
The program was jointly organised by the Scientific Advisory Board of the "Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)" and the "International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC)". The workshop’s goal was to:
- provide an insight into current and future application of Artificial Intelligence in Chemistry and
- generate provocative discussions on the future of this emerging field and potential impacts it could have on chemical sciences and society.
