Leeds eco-comic shortlisted for national award

A graphic novel produced by the University of Leeds Centre in Low Carbon Technologies has been shortlisted for a national award for its public engagement success.

Dreams of a Low Carbon Future was shortlisted as finalists out of 230 entries for the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) ‘Engage’ Awards 2014, in the category for ‘Engaging Young People’.

The project, which was led by Professor Paul Williams from the School of Chemical and Process Engineering, used the medium of comics to explore engineering issues around low-carbon technologies. Over 370 schoolchildren, 40 engineers and 20 artists created the cartoon book, entitled Dreams of a low carbon future, which explored how current environmental issues might affect the future of the Earth and its inhabitants.

James McKay, who works in the Centre in Low Carbon Technologies and managed the project, said: “The aim of the project was to work with young people in schools and other groups and to think about how current environmental issues and the challenges they pose might affect the future of the Earth and its inhabitants.”

The project was made possible thanks to funding from the Royal Academy of Engineering's Ingenious grant scheme, which supports projects that engage the public with engineering while also providing skills and opportunities in public engagement for engineers that take part.
