Title: Normalizing Ethical Conversations in Mathematics
Abstract: Mathematics is not a value-free subject. Students and practitioners in partner disciplines like statistics and computer science often receive some ethical guidance as part of their study. The conversations around ‘ethics in mathematics’ are simultaneously divisive and fundamental necessary for the field. In this talk, we will explore the value of ethics in mathematics, current movements regarding community-based ethical guidelines, and new research into when/how ethics could be presented with approaches for practitioners of mathematics to connect theory and practice–the conversations with the action.
