Healthcare Data: Opportunities and Challenges

Chris Smith (Yorkshire Centre for Health Informatics, University of Leeds)

Abstract: Healthcare data is routinely captured with increasing scale, frequency and detail; driven by strategic initiatives and increased prevalence of information technologies within healthcare settings. This data has the potential to transform the effectiveness and efficiency with which healthcare services are provisioned; improving patient outcomes and reducing service costs. Accordingly, there is a growing interest within the healthcare research community to use such data to underpin research and derive novel insights for clinicians, service managers and policy-makers. In this talk, I will give an overview of the healthcare data landscape, describe the opportunities that it presents for healthcare research, and discuss some of key technical challenges that must be overcome for such data realize its potential.
