Professor Martin Tillotson

I spent the first 16 years of my career working in research and innovation in the UK water sector. In 2011 I moved into academia to take up the position of Director of water@leeds, a large interdisciplinary water research and training centre at the University of Leeds. In 2014 I was appointed Chair in Water Management and was also elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. I have also held Visiting Professor positions in the School of Geography, University of Leeds and School of Nature Conservation, Beijing Forestry University. As well as research and teaching interests I have held a number of external advisory/peer review positions, including:

  • EPSRC Peer Review College, and membership of the Process Engineering & Sustainability Strategic Advisoty Teams (SATs, 2005-2014)
  • Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) Panel Member, UoA14 Civil & Construction Engineering (2011-2014)
  • External Examiner, Water Science Institute, Cranfield University (2011-2014)
  • Teachnology Advisory Group member for a water technology start-up (2017-2019)
  • Research Excellence Framework (REF2021) Institutional Level Environment Pilot Panel (ILEPP) Panel Member (2018-2022).

I have also held a number of internal advisory/peer review and leadership positions:

  • Deputy Director of Research & Innovation, School of Civil Engineering (2015-2022)
  • Member of University Impact Group (2018-2022)
  • Member of Impact & Knowledge Exchange Group, School of Earth & Environment (2022-ongoing).

  • Director of water@leeds
  • Co-Director WaterWISER CDT

Research interests

I am interested in water research and innovation, mainly in the areas of water and wastewater treatment, sludge processing and water resource management. I currently supervise PhD research students with interests in water resource management in the sub-tropics, retrofit SuDS, mitigation of invasive species in raw water transfer, advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment and 2D filtration of industrial (textile) wastewaters. I am happy to discuss PhD/MPhil/MSc research supervision with prospective students.
