Dr Nikolaos Nikitas

I am Structural Engineer focusing particularly on complex structural dynamics problems. When talking about aerodynamics I do not think of Formula 1 cars racing but rather about slender big civil structures moving in the air and creating intricate behaviour that still poses questions to our engineering family. Think of our Leeds Bridgewater Place wind issues or the seminal Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapse and there you will evidence the significance our courses like our MSc that try to prepare structural engineers for things we know but also things we don’t.

Within the highlights of our MSc I will definitely include modules like the ones in Design Optimisation and Earthquake Engineering that bring a new perspective to more classical undergraduate modules and enrich our students with better, stronger background. The dissertation part within our curriculum is a first class chance for those attending the course to perform high-end research, taking advantage of our unique testing facilities and becoming part of internationally significant successful research grants.

Personally, as a Programme Manager, my goal is to inspire my engineering students to seek excellence and become successful professionals; building unique portfolios in some of our top industrial partners or chasing research visions, within the academic arena, to make the structural engineering of tomorrow better.
