Megan Hindle

Megan is in her second year of a Chemistry MChem, BSc degree at the University of Leeds.
After taking A-level chemistry, Megan knew she wanted to develop her knowledge further and continue at University level. Reflecting on her decision, she said: “Chemistry is the centre of ground-breaking research in a never-ending list of topics, the study of it opens up doors to so many different pathways which I may have never even considered. The flexibility of these subject areas and chance to find my own pathway confirmed my choice of chemistry at the University of Leeds.”

A wide range of optional modules
The module options for chemistry cover a large range of subjects - Megan has loved gaining an understanding of so many topics as well as being taught by so many different people. She added: “The labs are definitely my favourite part of this course, being able to complete experiments alongside others to practically see what we are taught in lectures.”
Joining the music society
Alongside her course, Megan is a member of Leeds University Union Music Society (LUUMS). “The music society has been a large part of my time in Leeds outside of the academic side of university. I have loved meeting new people with the same interests as me and playing in orchestra together performing a wide range of repertoire.” As part of this society, Megan has had the chance to be a part of many social activities including the LUUMS ball, bowling nights and even a tour to Scotland.

Settling in to new accommodation
No matter what your needs, the University of Leeds has many different accommodation options to suit you. For her first year, Megan lived in Oxley Residences: “Whilst being far away from the campus itself, the members of staff working there made sure no one ever missed out on opportunities and that everyone was settling in well - they even ran a therapy dog night! The bus services in Leeds means no matter where you stay, the University is never too far away.”

Nightlife and societies
For Megan, both the University and the city has so much to offer. She said: “There is such a wide range of opportunities available for students in pretty much any area you can think of. With a lively nightlife, a vast selection of societies (plus the option to create your own!) and plenty of green space, there's something for everyone.”
“Leeds is such a large city with so many hidden treasures for students. It is a lively city full of lovely people and plenty of quiet cafes to study.”
Building confidence for the future
Coming to Leeds, Megan was very nervous about so many aspects of University. After almost two years of university, she now feels differently: “My experiences in Leeds so far have helped me to gain fundamental skills in which I can transfer into life after my course and has built my confidence in many different ways.”
“After University, I would love to be a part of a lab-based research team whilst continuing my passion for music. Maybe even one day study for a PhD!”
Advice to future students
Megan gives this advice to anybody who’s thinking of studying at Leeds: “Don't be afraid to ask questions! It's okay not to be sure about something; lecturers, lab technicians and your personal tutor are always happy to help.”
