Professor Alison Tomlin

I joined the University of Leeds as an academic member of staff in 1994 and have been teaching and conducting research on subjects related to the environmental impacts of energy production and usage for over 20 years. I have a particular interest in air pollution and climate change and ways to mitigate them through sustainable energy solutions; all of which are key components of the MSc course.

My current research focusses on facilitating the use of wind and solar energy within electricity supplies and on the sustainable use of bio-derived fuels, particularly in the transport sector. Outside of the university I sit on the UK DEFRA Air Quality Expert Group and am co-editor of the international journal 'Proceedings of the Combustion Institute'. At weekends I usually like to escape the city and climb a few hills within the nearby beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park.

I have had many enjoyable years of interaction with students from all over the world on the Energy and Environment programme. It is particularly interesting to hear students' international perspectives on finding sustainable solutions to the worlds growing energy needs. I am always impressed by the passion that students have for tackling problems in their home countries.

We aim to provide students with advanced knowledge of topics in sustainable energy engineering and the opportunities to build their analytical and practical skills so that they are well equipped to achieve their aspirations when moving on to professional roles. Masters projects are a highlight of the course and I have supervised recent dissertations on topics such as: strategic planning of future wind energy capacity in the UK; the air pollution impacts of local biomass heat installations; design of hybrid energy systems for different climate systems; engine combustion properties of biofuels.
