Before doing his PhD at Leeds, Joseph worked for the Cross River University of Technology. After graduating from Leeds, he resumed his duties with his previous employer, being promoted to the position of Senior Lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering.

Research into the durability of concrete

Joseph’s research aimed to investigate the effects of combined chloride and sulphate environments on the performance of slag cement systems; in particular the influence of slag composition, temperature and curing duration.

“I was inspired by my primary supervisor after our first meeting in Leeds upon my arrival,” Joseph said.

“I was already interested in studying about the durability of concrete because most structures in Nigeria are built using concrete.

He continued: “My research method was experimental, so I spent many hours in different laboratories: civil engineering materials, concrete structures, environmental and microscopy labs.”

Joseph’s research contributes to a body of work that aims to illuminate insight into how durable materials can be applied to a system of sustainable infrastructure.

Rewarding responsibilities and experiences

Along the lecturing and supervision of research projects at undergraduate and graduate levels, he also holds the role of Coordinator of Undergraduate Final Year Seminar and Project.

In addition, since November 2018, Joseph was appointed as the Director of Supervised Industrial Works Experience Scheme (SIWES) Unit.

Funding a PhD

To pursue his PhD, Joseph received a scholarship from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). He also received funding from the School of Civil Engineering.

Joseph also mentioned the support from his employer, family and friends was invaluable.

Pursuing a PhD at Leeds

Joseph studied his Master's degree in the UK and was inspired to carry out a PhD at Leeds. He said:

“I needed to explore another city, but it was important for me to attend a major University, that of which Leeds is among.

Leeds is one of the major UK universities held highly in Nigeria.

Joseph explained that experiences he had in Leeds, including the exposure to the research culture and writing research papers, were particularly helpful for his current career. With regards to Leeds, he added:

“Leeds is relatively more affordable than most cities in the UK. The University location near the city centre made life better for me.”
