Abubakar Aliyu Abba

Abubakar is a lecturer at The Polytechnic Bali in Nigeria. He graduated in 2020 after completing his masters degree programme in Embedded Systems Engineering MSc (Eng) from the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering. 

Postgraduate life at Leeds

Abubakar had always loved working with microcontrollers and microprocessors. He found the field to have a very wide range of applications in the modern era, and spans from biomedical, mechatroics and robotics, automobile, aerospace and much more. Moreover, as a Nigerian, Abubakar believes that Nigeria, as a developing country, needs specialists in the field in order to be self-reliant in modern technology.

To pursue his postgraduate qualification, Abubakar chose the University of Leeds because the university is research-intensive and part of the Russell Group Universities, and was ranked highly amongst competitor universities.

“The best aspect of the course was the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) design for system-on-chip module. Even though Covid-19 hindered some of my subject aims, I still found this module to be very interesting and relevant to my chosen field. It provided me with the understanding of the principles of the design of digital signal processing systems for VLSI technologies.

I really enjoyed my stay in Leeds as the University was full of activities. Leeds University Union has plenty of activites and societies to get involved in, career development opportunities, meet the recruiters program, outing for volunteer work such as the ones organised by the University Sustainability Team. I also had the opportunity to meet people from almost all parts of the world. It was a great experience.”

Project work

“I worked on a project titled ‘Study of the similariries between EMG data of different muscles’. It’s all about comparing the EMG signals generated by different muscles of human arms during neuromuscular activities to see if there are any similarities. The study is applicable in clinical/ biomedical diagnostics, production of artificial limbs and so on.”

Professional career

“I am currently a lecturer at The Polytechnic Bali, Taraba State, which is under the Federal Ministry of Education of Nigeria. I teach subjects related to electrical, electronic and computer engineering.

I had the opportunity to meet people from almost all parts of the world. It was a great experience.

The experience at Leeds has definitely helped me with my career. The education system itself, in terms of how the use of technology is fully involved in teaching and learning processes as well as the student-teacher relationship. All these put together really played a vital role in reshaping how I discharge my current duties as a lecturer, and will always try my best to emulate what I’ve learned and gained at Leeds.”
