Jihai Zhong

Jihai graduated from the University of Leeds in 2020, with a Masters degree in Communications and Signal Processing. He is currently pursuing his postgraduate research studies in ‘Handover techniques for Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) mobility communication network’.

Postgraduate studies

Jihai has always been passionate about wireless commucations, and chose the Communications and Signal Processing MSc through recommendations from his peers. It was also a great opportunity for him to extend his passion in this field of study. Jihai added, “Wireless communications can play a really important role for the development of intelligent world, which is the future, and I wanted to be part of it.”

Through the course, Jihai were able to understand the subject more widely, as the course provided him with a thorough inroduction to the different aspects of Digital Signal Processing. He said, “It is useful for people like myself who wants to have a deeper understanding in the subject area.”

For his Masters project, Jihai focussed on Handover technology, and worked on ‘Seamless Handover in High-Speed Railway’. He added, “Handover is the process of transferring an ongoing call from one network to another, but call drop can happen in the wireless mobility network. What I tried to achieve in my project was a seamless handover to improve the quality of service.”

Postgraduate research studies

Studying at Leeds has been such a wonderful experience that Jihai has extended his studies here, and continuing his research in Handover technology at a PhD level.

“My research is about the wireless mobility network when the ‘users’ are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) like drones. The main objective is to reduce the number of handover so I can improve the network quality when ‘users’ such as drones are air-bound.

I am focussing on wireless communications because I believe it plays an important role in the future intelligent world. We need stable, efficient and safe communication networks as they form the basis of smart products. It is my hope that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be used in different areas in the near future.” 

Life in Leeds

I really enjoy living in Leeds. Life in Leeds is busy, happy, yet exciting.

In his spare time, Jihai enjoys singing. He is a member of the Leeds Rev Open Choir, one of the 300-over societies that are available from the Leeds University Union. The choir is a fun, all-abilty choir open to anyone who loves to sing and perform. Jihai said, “I have met some lovely and friendly people to sing with. We even did Christmas Caroling last December at retirement homes. We had the opportunity to sing to the elderlies and to see them so happy made it very special and meaningful.”
