Postgraduate life at Leeds
Qing completed his undergraduate degree in Automation. When applying to continue his studies at a postgraduate level, he applied to quite a few institutions and had offers from several British universities. He finally decided on Leeds because of Leeds’ academic reputation – being the Top 100 university in the world, as well as the School’s reputation in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Qing said, “Besides, the university is highly comprehensive, which I believed would help broaded my horizon in various aspects.”
“Apart from the high quality teaching, the best aspect of the course was the opportunity to work in practical projects in state-of-the art teaching labs with modern first-class equipment, as well as working with innovative group of peers with a range of technical background. Though my course had essential core modules, we also had the opportunity to choose from a range of optional modules which gave us the chance to broaden our study and research in our own interested subject areas.”

Masters project
“I was working on wearable electronics for my masters proejct, focusing on designing a power meter for cyclists to track and improve their performance. The aim of the project was about building a smart system to obtain the pressure from bicycle crank. I did this by introducing a bridge circuit on strain guage to reflect the voltage change, using amplifiers to enlarge the signals for next stage processing, programming codes in the ADC components to formulate relationship between output power and the pressure from the crank. As a result cyclists can monitor their output power timely while riding bicycles.”
Building a professional career
“After finishing my studies at Leeds, I returned to China and was very successful in my job hunt where I immediately accepted a role as a hardware engineer at Hisense Group based in Shandong, China. Thanks to the professional training during my postgraduate study, I was able to quickly adapt to my new role in in the Research & Development centre of the company. After working in that role for almost 2 years, I was promoted and returned to Leeds, working for Hisense UK, based in Leeds.
I am currently working as a Product Manager, specialising in smart TV product planning and design, project management, as well as product marketing. My technical background has given me a deeper understanding on the production process and in which level of a product functionality could be realized from research resources. My role can be varied too, from formalising policies and enforcing operational standards, to consulting with the Product Development team to enhance product performance.”
Studying at the University of Leeds has certainly been one of the best learning experience I’ve had in the past years.
