Prof Jamie Bartram

Profile

Dr Jamie Bartram is a Professor at the universities of Leeds, UK and of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA.

At UNC between 2009 and 2019 he led creation of the Water Institute at UNC, established an unprecedented research hub driving policy programming and practice worldwide, and was awarded the  Don and Jennifer Holzworth Distinguished Professorship.

From 1998 to 2009 Dr Bartram worked at the World Health Organization’s Headquarters, serving primarily as Coordinator of the Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Health Unit, leading reform of its international monitoring and standard-setting and developed influential communities of practice.

From 2004 to 2006 he was also the first chair of UN-Water – the mechanism for coherence and coordination in UN system actions on water, overseeing establishment of terms of reference, inter-agency workplan development, trebling of direct financial support and establishment of two new offices.

Dr Bartram’s previous posts include: Coordinator of the Programme on Assessing and Managing Environmental Risks to Health at WHO/HQ; Manager, Water and Wastes at the WHO European Centre for Environment and Health in Rome – working especially on management of international waters; Head of the Environmental Health Division of the Robens Institute of the University of Surrey in the UK; and Public Health Scientist in Peru. 

He was chair of the North Carolina State Secretaries’ Science Advisory Board, and served on the steering committees of the Sanitation and Water for All alliance and the US Water Partnership, and on numerous advisory committees.

Dr Bartram has worked in public health and disease prevention, especially in relation to environment and health and water supply and sanitation; and in more than 60 developing and developed countries.

He was awarded the International Water Association’s 'Grand Award' in 2004, and a Water Environment Federation ‘Pioneer Award’ in 2018; and has held honorary or visiting professorships at the universities of Wales, Bristol and Surrey.   Dr Bartram is author of 180 academic papers and 60 book chapters; and author or editor of 50 books.  His first degree and PhD are from the University of Surrey, which awarded him its Vice Chancellor’s Alumni Lifetime Achievement award in 2019.
