Dr Anthony Herbert


Dr Herbert is a lecturer in Medical and Biological Engineering in the School of Mechanical Engineering, University of Leeds. Following a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Ireland, Galway, Dr Herbert completed a Masters of Science with distinction in Bioengineering and Doctorate of Engineering in Medical Devices at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

Dr Herbert then undertook a post doctorate career under the tutelage of Professors John Fisher and Eileen Ingham at the University of Leeds before being selected for a prestigious EPSRC E-TERM (Engineering in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine) landscape fellowship to investigate the challenges and translation of regenerative devices for anterior cruciate ligament replacement. The project focused on both novel next generation and modified contemporary products in the form of decellularised porcine xenogeneic and human allogeneic ligamentous scaffolds. Following this, he was awarded an EPSRC Medical Technologies Innovation Knowledge Centre award in conjunction with NHS Blood and Transplant Tissue and Eye Services aimed at the translation of a portfolio of decellularised allogeneic bone products targeting different clinical applications.

He is a chartered engineer (CEng) and a chartered scientist (CSci), a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine. Dr Herbert was the recipient of the 2018 British Orthopaedic Research Society International Travel fellowship and the 2018 UK Society for Biomaterials Young Investigator award.

Dr Herbert has been awarded the Personal Tutor Award in the Leeds Partnership Awards 2020 and the Head of School Award for Inspirational Learning and Teaching 2022.
