Photo-induced alignment of liquid crystals

Dr Kiyoaki Usami, Osaka Sangyo University, will be presenting a seminar on his research. All welcome to attend.

Photo-induced alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) is a promising alternative to the conventional rubbing technique, because it is a mechanical-contact-free, highly-reproducible, and uniform alignment technique.  Although various photo-alignment methods have been proposed, we are focusing on a method using films of polyimide containing azobenzene in the backbone structure (Azo-PI).  In this seminar, I would like to talk about the basis of photo-induced alignment of LCs and to introduce our research works about the method using Azo-PIs.
