Hip replacement is a surgical procedure that involves replacing the acetabulum and the femoral head with a prosthetic implant. This prosthetic implant consists of femoral head and acetabular cup socket creating low friction articulating surface. There are several material combinations that are currently used as articulating surfaces. The femoral head can be made of metal or ceramic material and the acetabular cup can be made up metal, ceramic or polyethylene material.

There is an increased demand by younger and more active patients with high expectations in terms of function for a longer lasting prostheses. Thus there is a continual need for further developments to improve the performance and reduce wear and patient’s biological response to wear debris generated by these prostheses. Preclinical investigations are at the heart of any new device / biomaterial developments and these include physical simulations (biomechanical and biological) and computational simulations.

The iMBE has developed a portfolio of advanced research methods which underpin the preclinical investigation of orthopaedic devices and support development of new products. These unique advanced research methodologies and translation into products provides the platform of this strategic industrial research partnership.
