Profile
Dr Bing Zhang is interested in developing light, strong and smart fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites for practical applications. This involves design, manufacturing and characterisation, powered by digital simulation. Dr Zhang welcomes PhD and postdoctoral applications from highly motivated candidates eager to conduct cutting-edge research in composites.
Dr Zhang conducted his PhD research on Through-Thickness Reinforced Composites at Bristol Composites Institute (BCI) and the Rolls-Royce Composites University Technology Centre (UTC), University of Bristol. After his PhD project, Dr. Zhang worked as a post-doctoral researcher at BCI and a Core team member of the Rolls-Royce Composites UTC. Dr. Zhang joined the University of Leeds as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in 2023. Dr Zhang also has 15-month full-time experience in industry as a R&D engineer.
Dr Zhang has worked on a number of projects funded by different bodies, including EPSRC, Innovate UK, Henry Royce Institute, GW4 Alliance, University of Bristol, University of Leeds and companies. In addition to a continuous track record of publications, Dr. Zhang's research outcomes have also been utilised by both industrial and academic users, such as Rolls-Royce, the National Composites Centre, and Vestas.
Dr. Zhang has a strong commitment to supporting research-led student education. He is involved in teaching modules for Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics students. He has successfully supervised or mentored a diverse group of students, from UG, PGT to PhD students.
